Photos of days

So that photo a day thing didn’t get any traction.  So here I’m posting a few from the past few weeks. Read the captions for more details.

Wow - long time no updates!

It has been a quiet blog lately.  I’ve been settling into a rhythm here and haven’t been compelled too much to share, but figured it’d be good to let people know I’m alive.
I’ve been back in Shanghai and living with a bit of a slower pace.  Concentrating on studying Mandarin and just enjoying being in [...]

我的生日,新的房子 - My birthday & new apartment!

Yesterday was an exciting day.  Not only was it my last day at work and my first day in the new place but it was also my birthday!
I’ve included a few photos of the new place.  It’s pretty nice to move out of the hotel.  I didn’t realize how much living in such a temporary-feeling [...]

A stretch of an analogy

This is just a thought tangent, but perhaps you may find it interesting…
As I struggle to learn to communicate in Mandarin here I keep feeling as if I have struggled this way before.  It is sort of a lingering familiarity that I couldn’t put my finger on.  But today it hit me - learning a [...]

A new chapter

There has been a slight change of plans here.  I will be ending my internship Google earlier than expected.  Today is actually my last day.  It is due to some unexpected expenses associated with overseas employment.  Because of these expenses it isn’t practical for me to continue working for the next two months.  However, this [...]

Another Bike Post!

Just a quick post with some pictures from a bike ride the other day.
Some Mountain Viewer Googlers were visiting the Shanghai office and Billion, my friend from the Shanghai Bicycle Rental shop, and I took them out for an authentic in-your-face bike experience.  We went first through the bustling Puxi district, across the pedestrian ferry, [...]

Hong Kong Part 2

Saturday I decided to take in some culture and headed down to the Hong Kong Arts Centre to watch a film about the Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama.  The film, titled I Adore Myself, documents her current creative process as well as her continued artistic success and recognition. The film was shot while she was in [...]

Hong Kong Part 1

I’m just settling back into Shanghai after an eventful three days in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is separated by a large harbor, dividing the city into Hong Kong Island and Kowloon District. I stayed on less touristy Kowloon side.  My hotel was in an interesting neighborhood surrounded by private schools. Each afternoon the streets surrounding would [...]

A video project: 绿色的 (lǜsède)

绿色的 (pronounced lǜsède, or kinda like loosuhduh) is the first experimental video project I’ve done in China that I would like to share.  The title means “green colored”, but is faintly homonymous with “Lucid”.
watch:
绿色的 [high res, QuickTime H.264 720p24 135Mb]
绿色的 [low res, QuickTime H.264 480p24 90Mb]

The short is an attempt to capture the flow and [...]

dense/close: observations regarding proximity

Just as a heads up, I in no way claim to be well versed on cultural differences.  I am solely speaking from my own experience.  If you have insight or are aware of research regarding my thoughts here, feel free to call me out or send it my way, I’d be more than happy to [...]
