Looking a little closer: the Shanghai Contemporary Art scene

It took me a while to get settled enough here to find time to start exploring my art interests in Shanghai.  In the past few days I’ve started poking my nose around town and online to see what people are up to.  I’ve found a couple of good leads.  Below is a brief list of what’s on my mind…

7th Shanghai Biennale. A contemporary exhibit shown at the Shanghai Art Museum.  I spent the majority of the day here exploring the three+ floors of work. I plan to make a more detailed post about this experience soon, but for now I will say it is definitely worth checking out!

莫干山路 (moganshan road): This area has come up multiple times in separate conversations relating to the Shanghai Art scene.  One night I was feeling restless and headed out there.  All the galleries were closed, but I got a pretty good feel for the neighborhood.  It seems like there are a lot of up and coming artists and designers packed very close together on this secluded little road.  I’m excited to give it a look during the day.

eARTS Urbanized Landscape: Focused on new media in Shanghai, this event will be running from the 18th of October until the 10th of November.  I hope to catch some of the live shows and outdoor installations.  The shows will be split between the Zendai MoMA and the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum.
