dense/close: observations regarding proximity

Just as a heads up, I in no way claim to be well versed on cultural differences.  I am solely speaking from my own experience.  If you have insight or are aware of research regarding my thoughts here, feel free to call me out or send it my way, I’d be more than happy to [...]

Looking a little closer: the Shanghai Contemporary Art scene

It took me a while to get settled enough here to find time to start exploring my art interests in Shanghai.  In the past few days I’ve started poking my nose around town and online to see what people are up to.  I’ve found a couple of good leads.  Below is a brief list of [...]

HK Bound

I just confirmed my flight to Hong Kong.  I will be there for several days over the National day holiday here.
I’ll be attending the gallery opening of the “SECOND LIFE” exhibit at Videotage.  My friend and classmate Annie Wan, a PhD candidate at DXARTS will be showing one of her pieces there.  I haven’t seen [...]

Two quick examples of the resourcefulness of people in Shanghai.

Chinese media sites resemble US counterparts

While in Shanghai I have come across a number of popular Chinese media and social networking sites that look surprisingly similar to their American counter parts.  The three sites I’ve picked out for comparison are Facebook/Xiaonei, Google/Baidu, and YouTube/YouKu.
I have not yet looked in depth at the similarities and differences between these sites.  However I [...]

As I type this Alex is packing his things to leave.  He is torn about leaving, but given the situation it’s the best decision.  Christophe is back in the US and his project is getting some traction in the community.  Alex wants to work at the time zone of his colleagues.  He’s also super excited [...]

Local ingenuity

During my time in Shanghai I have continually refrained from gawking and photosnapping at local activity here.  I feel like the camera only furthers the distance between me and my surroundings.  However, when I saw this I could not help but take a photo.
This guy was carrying this glass-door refrigerator by himself on a standard [...]

My bike lasted 9 days.  The night I went to visit Song Shuo’s school I came home and went straight to bed, forgetting that I had left my bike outside the office.  In the morning when Alex and I went to work it was not on the street.
We thought that perhaps the “parking authorities” there [...]

I have been recording my stories in Shanghai from the past two weeks.  Over the next couple days I will be retro-stamping my posts for the appropriate date that the event occurred.
For now, watch the future and the past.

I’ve reclaimed jim-george.com. What was formerly an archaic and obsolete self-expressive experiment is now an updated and current…self-expressive experiment.
I am a 5th year student of Computer Science at the University of Washington.  Right now I’m living and working abroad at Google in Shanghai, China.  I occupy myself with software, video projects, and web development.
